Nickelback
Silver Side Up
(Roadrunner)
By: Paul Thompson - ModernRock.com Silver Side Up, the follow-up to State, is a potential smash for any music enthusiast. If you're
looking for a comparison, consider Nickelback a
mellower, more polished Metallica. Silver Side Up is a compelling album with songs that target a wide range of music fans.
In the first single and monster hit "How You Remind
Me," lead singer Chad Kroeger passionately croons out
the opening lyrics with little more than a peaceful
guitar aiding him. "Never made it as a wise man / I
couldn't cut it as a poor man stealin' / Tired of living
like a blind man / I'm sick of sight without a sense of
feeling." While "How You Remind Me" appeals heavily
to the fans of Top 40 Rock, possible sleeper hit
"Where Do I Hide" features an opening guitar riff
reminiscent of Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water."
The opening track of the album "Never Again" proves
that Nickelback isn't afraid to tackle tough issues.
"Never Again" is a solemn song about domestic abuse.
"She looks at you...she wants the truth / It's right out
there in the waiting room with those hands / Lookin'
just as sweet as he can...never again." This song shows Nickelback's true depth and character. "Too
Bad" displays Nickelback's style versatility, which keeps their music fresh and non-repetitive. It is
slower and serves as a breather from the more powerful, hard rock songs that constitute most of the album.
Nickelback delivers an amazing live performance to compliment their studio excellence. The band easily
enthuses crowds with their music while at the same time creating a comfortable rapport. They seem extremely down to earth with a great sense of humor. When Nickelback gets on stage, they connect with the audience and form a special bond. It's these characteristics that transform a band from flavor of the week to musical
powerhouse for years to come.
Silver Side Up is a must for every rock fan's collection. With astounding vocalist Chad Kroeger at the helm and his powerful guitar riffs, it has become evident that Nickelback is here to stay. They have quickly vaulted themselves to top-tier
status after this memorable album.
Stay tuned!
