The Crystal Method
Tweekend
(Geffen / Outpost)
By: Jeff Leisawitz - ModernRock.com It's been a cool four years since The Crystal Method's debut album Vegas hit the streets and got dancefloors thumping around the globe. Since then the electronic duo of Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan have kept themselves busy spreading the music.
The guys hauled their synthesizers onto a number of eclectic tours including Family Values, Community Service and the Electric Highway. Meanwhile, tracks appeared in movie soundtracks like Spawn, South Park, and Lost in Space and the video game Nitrous Oxide.
When the boys finally got back to their hometown of Los Angeles all they wanted to do was return to the studio and make some more music. They holed up in The Bomb Shelter, a studio they built together nearly ten years ago in a two car garage in Glendale, CA. Endless hours later the Method emerged with a stunning set of brand new songs entitled Tweekend.
These eleven tracks take the CM sound to the next level. The funky, hot/tight grooves will certainly spin the action on thousands of turntables around the planet. Ravers will rejoice. And all will be good in the world.
Starting with the album's gritty opener, "PHD," the careful listener will discover nuances dropped within the electrobeats and hidden treasures buried in the basslines.
These songs remain upbeat, cranked a notch from the debut. "Wild, Sweet and Cool" and "Roll It Up" shake the action before any significant vocals appear on "Murder." On this one Stone Temple Pilot Scott Weiland steps up to the mic and lets loose in a style that is markedly different from anything he's done with his day job. Other notable musicians also contribute to the disc including Ryu and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello.
With vocal samples and raps on tracks like "Name of the Game," the Method defy musical boundaries at every turn. But it isn't until the tail end of the disc when "Over the Line" and "Blowout" drop the BPMs and offer up some of the records grooviest moments.
After all is said and done Tweekend is a blisterin' album that modulates, kicks and moves like a shooting star burning into the atmosphere. Don't expect to hear any of these tracks on your local top forty radio station. But be sure that you will hear these songs spin at the dance club or the friendly neighborhood basement rave. And that's a promise.
