What the hell ever happened to good old fashioned rock 'n' roll? You know what I mean. Sleazy, greasy, long haired blues rock. Guitar solos by guys who can play. Skinny singers who's mission in life is to sweat it out on stage. Well, it seems like most of that disappeared somewhere in the late 70's. But one band kept the vinyl spinning and eventually grew its sound out of the wreckage of that era — the Black Crowes.
Although the Crowes are nowhere near ready to call it quits, they just released Greatest Hits 1990-1999 A Tribute to a Work in Progress... Culled from a decade's worth of material spanning five brilliant studio albums, the Crowes put it all together on one CD to mark the turn of the millennium.
Unlike some bands who have to dig to fill a disc, the sixteen tracks here are all top shelf material. You can find the early hits — "She Talks to Angels", "Twice as Hard", "Jealous Again", and the Otis Redding cover, "Hard to Handle". Or you can dig deeper into the catalog for "Only a Fool" and "Kickin’ My Heart Around", from 1999's critically acclaimed By Your Side. Either way, all phases of the group's career are represented.
You've heard all these songs before but a high volume spin of "Remedy" or "Blackberry" will remind you what riff heavy rock is all about. With edges of the southern influence, funk and blues, it's no wonder this band has sold a cool 12 million albums during their time together.
In support of this disc, the Crowes take it on the road this summer for a series of dates with Led Zeppelin ax grinder Jimmy Page. Fueled by the freewheeling' spirit of hot summer nights, girls in skimpy t shirts and that good old fashioned rock 'n' roll, the Black Crowes promise to ignite fans with a steamy set of studio classics that can also be found on Greatest Hits 1990-1999 A Tribute to a Work in Progress...
