The Features
Exhibit A
(Universal Records)
By: James Laczkowski - ModernRock.com A lot of bands have recently obtained an “in with the old, out with the new” style of composition. It’s not that they’re not innovative; they just stem from tradition or draw from influences of musicians that have come and gone. A band like Interpol harkens back to the time of dancey new wave mixed with gloom-and-doom Goth. The warm reception towards groups like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand solidify the fact that The Features will undoubtedly shine in the spotlight as well. There’s no denying the vigorous buoyancy of “The Way It’s Meant to Be,” finger snaps and all. But one can easily compare such a track to the likes of The Stooges. The joy doesn’t come in examining the lyric booklet, but instead, serves as a visceral complement to a night-out hanging with friends in the city clubs. The Features offer a short set of tightened, flesh-and-bones rock and roll with a manic confidence that’s easy on both the ears and feet. They contain elements of both pop and punk but the end result is neither/or. Embracing the sensibilities of the abovementioned bands only with razor-sharp edge, The Features are an exceptional example of what party rock is all about. The fire and brimstone blaze of “Blow It Out” comes with a woo-woo sing-along chorus that is irresistible. “The Idea Of Growing Old” finds them trekking new territory with a G major ballad with its heartfelt stanza of “You turn me on to the idea of growing old.” Their sound is consistently timely and by the sound of Exhibit A, they will ultimately achieve timelessness as well. The Features demystify rock and roll while seizing the basic fundamentals of a catchy track. Exhibit A is nothing short of being beautifully brief and blissful without trying too hard or coming across as pompous or mopey. This is a must-hear record that features all the best that good rock can offer, clearly serving as a stepping stone to a rewarding future for a truly deserving band of outsiders.
