Longwave
The Strangest Things
(RCA Records)

By: Christina Martinez - ModernRock.com

Longwave is anything BUT close to sounding like The Strokes, so forget about all the likeness you’ve been hearing. The only thing close to resembling The Strokes is coming straight out of the post-punk scene of NYC.

The Strangest Things contains a calm and confident rock that does indeed rock, minus the loud, screeching voices and guitar roars. Lead vocalist Steve Schiltz shares his pleasant voice, taking us to a mysterious place with foreground ringing guitar waves. Bassist Dave Marchese proves his capabilities throughout the album, shifting from speed to longevity. Along with alienesque, space noise from Shannon Ferguson and defining drum beats of Mike James, Longwave is melancholy yet hopeful with lines, such as “When all your strength is wearing thin, hanging on ‘til the end, I can give you what you’re looking for.”

At a point when the pace slows down and you think you’re about to share a self-loathing experience, the band definitely surprises to show that they can have some fun with lyrics like, “When they’ve got you by the balls, you can’t see anything at all.” Then you get a sense like your engaging in a conversation with ET on walkie-talkies.

Explosive, yet calm. Melodious, yet edgy. Influenced by a range from Nirvana to U2, Longwave still maintains a sound of their own. No complex chords, nor any surprising hooks – just shaggy hair, collected rock that might, in fact, get you by the balls.

The 9th song on the CD “All Sewn Up” is a personal favorite and a Must Listen!!
