Johnny Cash has been a household name for nearly five decades. He is a complex, unpredictable ball of energy that no one has been able to categorize. He has more albums (45) in print than most artists have the privilege of recording. He was the youngest artist ever inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He is also the only artist, other than Elvis Presley to be inducted into both the Country and Rock n Roll Halls of Fame. He has sold over 50 million records worldwide and has won 11 Grammy awards, including the 1999 Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2002 Best Country Album Award.
On The Man Comes Around, Johnny Cash covers the Nine Inch Nails song "Hurt". Cash delivers the promise to propel the song to the next level. He gives a performance that is downright eerie in its impact. Flooding the ears of the listener with unprecedented emotion and charisma. "Hurt" isn't drenched with overpolished sonic confusion, but it's an accurately painted canvas of pain and sorrow.
Johnny Cash enlisted the help of Billy Preston (Beatles,Rolling Stones,Jackson 5) and John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) to perform on "Personal Jesus" from Depeche Mode. The song is brilliantly executed. Cash sings with conviction and intensity. "Personal Jesus" bleeds with inescapable sing along chorus' and swirling melodies. Cash seems to be reaching out to a new generation and winning over a new fan base convincingly.
Mr. Cash spits a tale from yesterday with the beautifully written "In my life" from John Lennon and Paul McCartney of The Beatles. We go on a voyage of times remembered with Johnny's vividly textured voice that is both powerful and passionate as it draws you into this musical journey.
Don Henley joins Cash on The Eagles classic "Desperado" . You can hear that Johnny Cash signature sound, plus scattered residue of The Eagles through out "Desperado". When Mr. Cash re-records someone's song he still stay's within the fundamental groundwork of the composition that's been laid out.
American IV : The Man Comes Around is a musical landscape of diversity. With musicians ranging from Fiona Apple and Nick Cave to Randy Scruggs and Marty Stuart - all came to assist Mr. Cash and lend their musical talent to the project.
This disc is a canopy of well written songs and good musical ability that cannot be stacked into just one category of sounds. If you are looking for an opus of diversity that you want to go into with no expectations, then you are ready for the nearly five decade evolution of "The Man in Black" Johnny Cash and his latest disc American IV : The Man Comes Around.
