Alanis Morissette
Feast On Scraps
(Maverick)
By: Jeff Leisawitz - ModernRock.com In the modern age, the lines between CDs and DVD music packages are quickly blurring. These days many labels are including a DVD along with an artist’s new album. Leave it to Alanis Morissette to make some waves. Her new CD/DVD, Feast on Scraps, starts with a nine song CD that includes eight unreleased tracks along with an acoustic version of her recent hit, “Hands Clean,” and ends with a full on DVD production.
While some songs like, “Fear of Bliss” and “Offer” are obvious b-sides, some tracks here are powerful, intense Alanis. “Bent for You” knocks the beats while revolving electric guitars stir beneath the bass lines. Then “Unprodigal Daughter” cranks distortion and 70’s guitar riffs to get the point across.
While these red hot songs always thrill, one of the more engaging aspects of this songerwriter is her ability to drop the volume and go introspective. “Sorry to Myself” lands as one of the CD’s strongest cuts. This one questions the signer’s relationship with herself and a potential lover. While this track pushes past the five minute mark, it is still a darkly seductive and engaging song.
If you’re into watching Alanis writhe and sweat in video form, you’re in luck on the DVD. Captured mostly in Rotterdam during her 2002 world tour, the DVD features more than ninety minutes of live footage, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of her last album, Under Rug Swept, and some rare home videos.
For serious Alanis fans, Feast on Scraps is a treasure. For the few people out there who are not yet turned on to this extraordinary artist, the real goldmine is in Alanis’s proper albums. So dig in. And find out what you oughtta know.
