Avril Lavigne
Let Go
(Arista)
By: Paul Thompson - ModernRock.com At this point in her short career, Avril Lavigne has
only just begun to reach her full potential. While
there is absolutely no way of telling whether or not
Lavigne will become a fixture in the music scene in
the years to come, Let Go is a very good debut
album. During her unlikely blitz through the
Billboard Top 100, the single "Complicated" has been
one of the hottest songs on the chart. The funny
thing is, I don't even view "Complicated" as one of
the top three tracks on the album. Not to take
anything away from this hot single, but record sales
could skyrocket when (or if) singles for the driving rock numbers "Sk8er Boi",
"Unwanted", and "Losing Grip" are released.
The style that Lavigne brings to the table is
refreshing compared to some of the pop singers in the
Britney Spears mold. Avril sports a unique sound featuring strong vocals complemented by clear driving guitar licks and drum melodies. All instruments are obviously taking second stage to her vocals. It is also unique to see a young singer who is also a songwriter and plays an instrument (guitar). Avril Lavigne, along with Michelle Branch, are changing the role of women in the music business. However, if Lavigne wants to enjoy longevity in today's male dominated rock world, she'll have to rely on more than her talent. Lyrically, the album is on the weak side. "Sk8ter Boi" has a great rock beat, but the lyrics "He was a punk/she did ballet/What more can I say?" aren't going into the rock 'n roll hall of fame.
It's easy to forget the incredible youth of many of
today's top acts. It's also easy to forget that Avril
Lavigne is only 17 years old, and the prospects of instant fame, making new music and touring could overwhelm her. The point is that no one could possibly know what the
future holds for this new budding star. Her career as
a musician could end next year or never. You never
know. But from what I've seen and heard from Avril
Lavinge at this stage, it's easy to see why she's been
climbing up the charts and producing hit singles.
She's just got what it takes with Let Go.
