2 Skinnee J's

New York City, August 6, 1999 -- If you’ve never heard of them, the first thing you’ll want to know is what 2 Skinnee J’s sound like. Trying to categorize the band’s sound isn’t an easy task: it's made up of bits of rock, hip-hop, funk, punk, metal, and just about every other form of music known to mankind. Imagine what would happen if the Beastie Boys, 311, Rage Against the Machine, and De La Soul had a musical orgy. That's about as close as you're ever going to get to nailing down the sound of 2 Skinnee J's.
The crowd at the August 6 show at Irving Plaza seemed to sense that the band is about to blow up. You could almost sense that in three years time the band will be playing larger arenas and everyone and their sister will be wearing their T-shirts, but the fans at this show will be able to say they saw them before they hit the big time.
Highlighted by frenzied antics of vocalists J Guevara and Special J, the band got the crowd going with the guitar-driven aggression of "Wild Kingdom" and "Whammy." Crowd favorites included the hip-hop influenced "(718)," "Pluto," and "Riot Nrrrd." The band's sound was completed by guitarist A. Mays, bass player Eddie Eyeball, drummer Andy Action, and The SPICE on keyboards.
Perhaps the best thing about the sound of 2 Skinnee J's is that you realize halfway through the show that none of their many influences overpowers their songs. Of course there's no guarantee that 2 Skinnee J's will ever be a household name, but if you're looking for a good live show from a party band with a unique sound, check them out. And while you're at the show buy a T-shirt for your little sister. She'll thank you for it.
