Spider-Man
Music From And Inspired By
(Sony)
By: Jeff Leisawitz - ModernRock.com In case you've been deaf, dumb and blind since early May, Spider-Man has pretty much taken over America. Spinning his web across the city, the movie has been breaking records for superheroes and studio execs alike. But behind the multi-million dollar comic book hero is a soundtrack with just as much punch, grit and finesse as our genetically enhanced superfriend.
Starting out with the vintage recording of the theme song from the animated series, the Spider-Man soundtrack features nineteen tunes from some of the hottest acts today. Nickelback's Chad Kroeger took some time off from his day job to record "Hero," a song that also features Saliva's Josey Scott. This mid-tempo rocker plays drama and distortion into an epic sonic treat.
Another smokin' track is the Sum 41 single, "What We're All About (Original Version)." Along with ax man Kerry King (from Slayer) this funky rap/ punk tune has been firing up Sum fans worldwide. And speaking of world wide, this disc is also an internet key that gives anyone with a PC access to a streaming version of the new Sum video along with other great surprises.
While many artists, including Jerry Cantrell, The Strokes, Theory of a Dead Man and Pete Yorn, all landed tracks on the disc, only Macy Gray actually made it to celluloid with "My Nutmeg Phantom (Morello Mix)." If you recall, Ms G. was getting all super funky in midtown just before the city fell to pieces.
Danny Elfman, formerly of Oingo Boingo, goes all cinematic with "Main Titles" and "Farewell" before Aerosmith re-heats "Theme from Spider-Man" with some serious riffs and plenty of big city attitude.
While many soundtrack albums tend to be strung together with little thought or coherence, Spider-Man breaks the mold by retrofitting classic tunes with brand new music and cool internet access. Watch out! Here comes Spider-Man!
