Enigma
Love, Sensuality, Devotion- The Greatest Hits
(Virgin)
By: Jeff Leisawitz - ModernRock.com Michael Cretu has been recording under the name Enigma for more than ten years. Beginning with the stunning success of "Sadeness," the international hit single from 1991's debut effort, MCMXC A.D., Enigma introduced listeners to a fusion of old world Gregorian chants and futuristic electronic sounds. The post modern/ new age vibe caught on fast and took hold in dance clubs around the world.
Since then this French songwriter/ producer has released a series of albums that touch on gothic themes of love, spirituality and the darker aspects of human nature. On Love, Sensuality, Devotion- The Greatest Hits, Enigma compile more than a decade's worth of music on one CD.
Songs like "The Landing," "Gravity of Love," "TNT For the Brain," "Principles of Lust," "The Cross of Changes," "Return to Innocence," "Mea Culpa" and many others span Enigma's deep and visionary history. Tracks here are drawn from all four of Enigma's major releases including Cross of Changes, Enigma 3: Le Roi Est Mort, Vive le Roi and The Screen Behind the Mirror.
While softcore Enigma fans may be familiar with the dance mixes and radio hits, this collection pulls from deep within the catalog to show the breadth and depth of the Enigma sound. Cretu uses rich synthesizer swells and tight percussive loops alongside enormous symphonic samples and cathedral-like reverbs to create ambient atmospheres second to none. Whether quiet and sublime or upbeat and noisy, Cretu feeds our desire with a unique style that has been copied many times but never properly duplicated.
The seventeen tracks on Love, Sensuality, Devotion- The Greatest Hits serves the listener by inviting her into the sacred world of Enigma. To fully understand and appreciate the gravity and ecstasy of this music, one really needs to take the time to fully explore the entire catalog of this amazing recording artist. But for a quick sampler, you can't go wrong with the timeless charms of Love, Sensuality, Devotion.
